Celtic Cook Off Gary OHanlon

Gary O’Hanlon – Ireland

Regrettably Paul Flynn who was due to represent Ireland in this year’s Celtic Cook Off has to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances, but we are delighted to announce that Gary O’Hanlon replaces of the VM Restaurant in County Longford has gallantly stepped in to replace him.

Gary hails from Ramelton in Co. Donegal and he began his career in The Rosapenna Hotel in Downings aged just 15, from there he moved to the famous Tourism College Killybegs before working around Ireland from La Cave in Dublin  to Stormont Hotel  in Belfast.

Taking a leap of faith Gary then went stateside, to Boston, Massachusetts, where he spent 6 years opening and establishing Devlin’s Restaurant. During this time and at the young age of 23, Gary was named as one of Boston's best chefs and contributed to "Great Chefs Cooking for Great Friends", a cookbook in aid of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In 2004 he was also named as one of America's rising Champions by "Affishianado" magazine for his efforts to stop the over fishing of Chilean Seabass, highlighting the need to buy sustainable seafood. A year later in 2005, Devlin’s was named one of Boston's Best.

Later that year, Gary returned to Ireland, where he began working at The Olde Post Inn Cavan, which won Best Restaurant Ulster from Food & Wine Magazine and Georgina Campbell's Ireland Guide. It was some years later in 2008, Gary left to set up VM @ Viewmount House in County Longford. Quickly establishing itself as one of Ireland's finest restaurants, the VM Restaurant has won Best Country House Restaurant Leinster in 2010, Food & Wine Magazine Commended "Best Restaurant Leinster" 2011, Georgina Campbell "Sunday Lunch of the Year" 2012, and Bord Bia "Just Ask" winner February 2012.

VM @ Viewmount House has even featured in the prestigious Bridgestone Top 100 Restaurants and Places to Stay in Ireland Guides every year since 2009 and Viewmount House was named by the Irish Independent as one of Ireland's Top 10 Places to Stay & Eat in 2010.

Honoured to be replacing Paul and representing Ireland in this year’s Celtic Cook Off, Gary will be competing against the other Celtic Cook Off Chefs, which include: Ian Bennett from Wales, Tony Singh from Scotland, Butch Buttery from The Isle of Man, Stephane Delourme from Brittany and Jack Stein from Cornwall.
