West Cork Hotel are delighted to announce our partnership with Blue Thunder Charters. This highly-regarded local business is owned and operated by father and son, Michael and Iain O’ Driscoll who, between them, have more than 50 year’s expertise to offer. Michael runs ‘Blue Thunder’ a Lochin 33 ft boat out of his birthplace, the beautiful fishing port of Schull, just 15 miles (24 km) from The West Cork Hotel. Under his calm and assured guidance, visitors can experience the clear, beautiful waters off Fastnet Rock, Mizen Head and Carberry’s Hundred Isles.
‘Blue Thunder’ is fully licensed to take 12 passengers; children -under parents’ supervision - are very welcome. Safety is paramount aboard ‘Blue Thunder’ with buoyancy aids provided to all. There are toilet and galley facilities onboard, and the boat is equipped with the latest in navigational electronic aids. Rods are available free of charge. Tackle is also provided free of charge -though there is a nominal charge incurred if you lose your first round. Live bait can also be purchased; once again, there is no charge for the initial round.
With Michael and young Ian at the helm you can also experience Deep Sea Angling at its best. They’ll escort you to and from the rolling waters off the Fastnet Rock, as well as to the many reefs and wrecks that dot the Mizen Peninsula. Your skippers will share their hard-won knowledge, enabling you to discover secluded coves and tucked-away places known only to West Cork’s seasoned sailors.
Blue Thunder Charters cater for both the experienced and inexperienced, if keen, ones. Fishing waters in this region can often yield skate with a weight approaching 300lb – so a day’s charter can provide a real physical challenge; it is therefore re-assuring to know you are in safe and capable hands. Michal and Ian will stop over (for a well earned cup of tea, or something stronger!) on Cape Clear and, by prior arrangement, on beautiful Sherkin. Both these stop-overs have, in recent years, proven hugely popular with families and groups.
The West Cork Hotel and Blue Thunder Charters will be delighted to provide you, your family or your group with both full (9 am.-5/6pm, depending on tides) and half day (9am – 1.30) hire.
