Recent Wedding Survey

We here at the West Cork Hotel have over the years gained a reputation as one of the key wedding venues in West Cork. Also providing civil ceremonies in West Cork we have catered for all manner of wedding receptions over the years. We know that when it comes to planning the perfect wedding or civil ceremony, there are many routes to take from the popular traditional themed weddings to creative bespoke ceremonies.

However according to a recent survey on weddings, it seems that despite the vast choice and options out there for a number of alternative and individual weddings, we Irish are still a conservative and traditional bunch. Despite the wide range of options now available for creating a truly individual and imaginative wedding, some interesting results from a recent wedding survey by Hitched.ie (carried out as part of the overall Global Hitched Ltd brand) have shown that Irish brides and grooms to be, tend to play safe by sticking to tradition in the key aspects of weddings.

Some interesting facts that came out of this survey were that 76% of Irish couples still go for religious ceremonies. And with a huge diverse selection of wedding cakes, (homemade, one-tiered, special themed, elaborately decorated, sponge as opposed to fruit base, coloured or flavored etc) as well as clever and quirky alternatives to the traditional cakes (wedding cupcakes anyone?) now available, the traditional tiered wedding cake is still top choice with 73% of the vote. And the wedding dress is still sacred. Despite economic circumstances only 17% of Irish brides surveyed were willing to sell their dress post big day. Of the rest 43% preferred to have their gown cleaned and stored away post wedding with 19% hoping to keep their dress for their future children and grandchildren and 13% planning to up cycle their dress, by turning it into a Christening gown.

There is hope for change though, one area in which there was a noticeable break away from tradition was when it came to footing the bill, only 6% keeping with convention and expecting the brides family to foot the whole bill the majority (52%) opting to foot the bill themselves.

So what does this tell us about Irish attitudes to weddings? That we are more tied to traditional weddings than we thought or are we more likely to play it safe for family and friends? Who knows? However despite what the survey hints at, whether you are a traditionalist, a follower of fashion or an iconoclast willing to make your own rules, whether you agree with the survey results or not, you can be sure with such a wide choice of wedding options, products and services not to mention adaptable wedding venues in a host of scenic settings willing and able to go that extra mile, there is everything available to help you make your dream wedding.
