Smartphone App aims to be an aid to families on holiday
A new smartphone app is being launched today with the aim to save lives at sea.
The new ISA Safe Trx allows users to log their trip before they leave the short, and tracks your progress using a GPS system. If you are not back when you are expected to be, its sends a text to your next of kin, who can then check a website and established if you’re still out at sea. The coastguard can then be alerted.
Harry Hermon, the CEO of the Irish Sailing Association said the app will close down other processes on the phone to save battery life if the phone battery begins to die, and will tell people on shore (the next of kin) that the battery is running low and that’s why they are not getting a signal.
Whilst the app is being hailed as revolutionary, there are some concerns that the less experienced water users might think that mobile phone technology is reliable replacement technology as the only form of communication at sea.
With so many coastal towns in west cork, we here at the West Cork Hotel are delighted to read about the introduction of this new app and the new steps to making water safer for locals and holiday makers in the West Cork area.
