The Changing face of the West Cork Hotel - €2 Million Facelift to Celebrate Centenary Year
March 2010
Skibbereen’s “West Cork Hotel” is celebrating its centenary year with a €2 million revamp, marking the dawn of a new era for the region’s most unique and best known hotels.
The West Cork Hotel is the only hotel in West Cork’s beautiful main town of Skibbereen. The ten bedroom establishment was originally built in 1910 by John and Annie Murphy, and was perfectly situated beside the old Cork-Baltimore railway line. In 2006, local businessman Tim Looney bought the hotel with his wife Marion. Now, in it’s centenary year, the West Cork is enjoying a new lease of life and looking ahead to another one hundred successful years in business.
Renovations carried out to date have included the re-fit and extension of the hotel’s restaurant, Kennedy’s, as well as the relocation and extension of the reception area, the refit of the Lough Hyne meeting and dining suite as well as the addition of a new lift.
New menus have also been introduced by head chef Dean Diplock who has infused Kennedy’s Restaurant with his culinary flair with influences from around the world. A children’s menu has also been introduced, making The West Cork Hotel the perfect location for all ages to enjoy.
Speaking of the rejuvenation of the hotel, General Manager, Charlie Costelloe said “It has been a number of years since the hotel has received such a boost and we believe that we are now in a perfect position to push ahead for a further hundred years of success. Skibbereen is a beautiful destination to visit and hold a wedding and now that work is complete, the West Cork Hotel has everything to offer. There will be many special events and offers throughout the coming months to mark the centenary year so I would urge everyone to keep an eye on the website!”
WEST CORK HOTEL REVS UP FOR THE 2009 FASTNET RALLY - 2009 Fastnet Car Rally arrives in West Cork
October 2009
The West Cork Hotel, main sponsor of the 2009 Fastnet Rally is bracing itself for an influx of rally drivers, sports enthusiasts and commentators, ahead of the county’s hugely popular car rally.
Organised by the Skibbereen and District Car Club and running over the October Bank Holiday Weekend, the rally has become a major event for the region.
Speaking of the upcoming rally, Charlie Costelloe, General Manager of the West Cork Hotel said ‘We are delighted to continue our association with the Fastnet Rally. It brings a great buzz and an abundance of visitors to the town. We are also fortunate to have the support of the Skibbereen Business Association, who have come on board for the first time this year.’
The 2009 Fastnet Rally will run over 4 stages in total, with 140 stage kilometres in close proximity of Skibbereen town. The format stays the same as previous years, with 3 stages being used twice and a single run over the final stage.
Mechanical scrutiny of cars takes place on Saturday 24 October at the NCT centre in Skibbereen town, with the West Cork Hotel acting as rally headquarters. The official race kicks off at 8.10am on Sunday 25 October at the Skibbereen Mart with the winner expected to reach the final ramp at the West Cork Hotel by 5pm.
This year’s rally is expected to attract a record number of accomplished drivers, as it also incorporates the final rounds of the 2009 Dunlop National Championships, the 2009 Thomand Crystal Southern 4 Championship and the counting round for the 2009 TMC Windows Skibbereen and District Car Club Championship.
Competition will be fierce between Niall Maguire (Subaru WRC) recent winner of the Seaview Hotel Donegal Harvest Rally and the penultimate round of the Dunlop National Championship 2009, with his Dunlop title rival, Patrick Elliot (Subaru WRC). Niall McCarthy should be another strong contender as he returns to defend his 2008 title.
The overall winner of the 2009 West Cork Hotel Fastnet Rally will be announced at 10pm on Sunday 25 October, at an award ceremony in the West Cork Hotel.
Proceeds from the rally will be donated to West Cork Rapid Response, and the Cystic Fibrosis Charity, Build 4 Life, to assist in the development of a specialist unit for Cystic Fibrosis patients at Cork University Hospital.
