Deep Sea Angling Festival in West Cork

August 20th, 2012 by West Cork Hotel Ireland

Being based in the heart of the region, comes with its many advantages for our hotel in West Cork, one of which is the access to the many great scenic and happening towns and villages of the surrounding areas. After all the action that has been happening in the Bantry and Sheeps Head regions to the west of us, the action now turns to the immediate southeast and to the beautiful waters and coastline of neighbouring seafaring village Baltimore, just a few minutes’ drive from us here at the West Cork Hotel.

There anglers both professional and amateur can look forward to some great sea angling as the coastal village hosts its annual Deep Sea Angling Festival, running from Thursday 23rd – Saturday 26th August. Over these 3 days expect to see friendly competition in the coastal waters with the winners announced at special prize winning ceremonies within different pubs of the village every evening. With many different categories of competition and conservation and sportsmanship high on the list, it looks to be an easy going and fun competition in scenic surroundings. And whether you are an angler or just a visitor to this beautiful scenic area and looking for things to do in West Cork, throughout the few days there will be a lively and welcoming atmosphere around the village.

With 3 days of competition out in the sea and a warm reception inland these upcoming days offer the perfect excuse to be heading down to Baltimore and West Cork. So if you’re staying in the West Cork region, why not head down to this scenic coastal region and check out the action for yourself.

Irish President Michael Higgins stays at West Cork Hotel

April 23rd, 2012 by West Cork Hotel Ireland

Newly appointed Irish President, Michael D Higgins selects the West Cork Hotel as his hotel of choice when he was visiting the Cork and Kerry region this weekend.

The President was in the area to attend a commemoration in Union Hall on Sunday for the 5 fisherman who lost their lives earlier this year following the sinking of the Tit Bonhomme trawler off the coast of West Cork. The Tit Bonhomme sank after hitting Adam’s Island at the entrance to Glandore Bay in stormy seas on the way back to shore after a three-day prawn fishing trip. Speaking at the ceremony, President Higgins expressed his sincere sympathies to all who lost loved ones on 15th January 2012 and his gratitude to the men and women of the Naval Service, the Coast Guard, An Garda Siochana, the teams of volunteer divers and hundreds of volunteers who helped and assisted in the recovery operation.

Staying in the recently refurbished hotel Suite, President Higgins and his wife enjoyed a meal at our very own Kennedy Restaurant in Skibbereen on Saturday night and chatted to guests and locals in the Ilen Bar, where he was serenaded by The Kiltha Tones male choir from Youghal, who were also guests at our hotel in West Cork this weekend.

President Higgins, we look forward to welcoming you back.
