2016 Taste of West Cork Festival
If you are looking to check out what’s on in West Cork over the next few weeks, then look no further than Taste of West Cork. It’s that time of year again where foodies in West Cork are given the chance to sample the culinary delights of West Cork as well as soak up the sights on West Cork’s islands.
This year’s festival runs this year from the 9th until the 18th September and as part of the festival 170 culinary and event events will take place in the region’s 32 towns, villages & 8 islands. Celebrity chef Derry Clarke, of Michelin Star L’Ecrivan restaurant fame is also involved in this year’s much-awaited event. Other guest celebrity chefs include Catherine Fulvio and Rachel Allen.
The popular 10-day event welcomes visitors to the foodie’s paradise of West Cork with several chefs preparing culinary themed feasts in a range of local restaurants as well as food tastings al fresco. Not only that but there are a range of foraging walks planned, art and food trails, open-air markets, seminars, cook offs, master classes with expert chefs and intimate evenings with local artisan food producers.
Traditionally a solely Skibbereen-based festival, festival organisers have now branched the festival out further afield to West Cork and it now embraces dozens of other villages, towns, islands in this year’s event. Islands such as Sherkin Island, Bere Island, Garnish Island, Whiddy Island, Heir Island and Cape Clear. “The combination of land and sea, town, village, and islands within this vibrant festival highlights the pre-eminent position of West Cork for food and fun along the popular Wild Atlantic Way,” say the organisers.
An integral component to this year’s festival is also a forum entitles “Our Farms ,Our Food, Our Future” which takes place on Sunday 12th September at our very own, West Cork Hotel. This exciting forum, chaired by Ella McSweeney from RTE’s Ear to the Ground, discussed the interdependence between modern farming and food production practices and health. This exciting forum will also include talks from key influential speakers from all over the world of food, agriculture and business such as UCC’s Professor of Psychiatry at APC Microbiome Institute Ted Dinan, Botanist Madeline McKeever, Darina Allen and many many more.
