Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival

The scenic fishing village of Baltimore is the place to be over the next few days with the Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival taking place from the 22nd until the 24th May. The festival is a celebration of traditional wooden boats and is a must for those who own, sail or has an interest in boats.

The aim and goal of the festival is to encourage interest in the traditional wooden boats of the area to promote the revival in traditional boat building. The festival is now a regular event where the village hosts lovers of wooden working boats worldwide.

Every year the festival attracts boats from both here in Ireland, the UK and across Europe including France. Races are organised for various types of boats during the festival and in the pilot race, Currachs are rowed out to boats which are under sail, where a pilot is also put on-board This is inspired by the real life race to get to work as a pilot on a transatlantic sailing ship. 

During the festivals, talks will also be held in Dún na Sead Castle and the Baltimore sailing club. Other planned activities include demonstrations of how to build a boat, lobster pot weaving as well as rope-fender making. There are plenty kid’s activities planned also including model boat building.

Sailors and boat-lovers from near and far are invited to the stunning village of Baltimore for a weekend of sailing, talking, learning and partying in true West Cork style!
