New west cork canoeing route

With our scenic location close to the River Ilen and the west cork coastline, Skibbereen has always been a key base for visitors looking for things to do in west cork and test the outdoors. Being so close to a number of scenic areas of outstanding natural beauty, mean activity based holidays are big in Skibbereen and surrounding areas of west cork.

Here in Skibbereen there is no escaping the special attractions of the outdoors. To the outdoor enthusiast and groups looking for a good selection of adrenaline pumping activities the one of a kind landscape of west cork brings all manner of outdoor adventures and activities. Indeed the region is a goldmine for adventure and activity based holidays. When it comes to sea kayaking west cork is the ideal location given the natural landscape of coastlines and seascapes, meandering rivers and inland terrain of stunning mountain ranges, which open up all manner of sea based activities, watersports, hiking/trekking options and other land based adventure activities.

And with a new initiative giving financial backing to create a new kayaking and canoeing trail that goes from the Ilen River in Skibbereen to nearby Baltimore (the Roaring Water Bay region) there will be even more reasons to note Skibbereen and west cork as a haven for a variety of outdoor adventure pursuits. The new proposal will help to open up even more opportunities for water based activities and give kayaking enthusiasts, visitors and locals alike a new kayaking route to explore.

The trail will begin with an upgrading and creation of slipways along the proposed kayak route. Deelish Pier which is located close to our hotel in county Cork in Skibbereen town center will be the first slipway to be upgraded, with other slipways to be added/upgraded later to allow canoeists and kayakers follow a trail around Roaringwater Bay. In time the local authority hope to create more routes along the West Cork coast for similar, outdoor, water-borne activities with a look at developing other piers for outdoor pursuits in Bantry, Castletownbere, and on the Beara and Sheep’s Head peninsulas creating a network of kayaking routes around the vast area of west cork. When it comes to hotels near Bantry the West Cork Hotel is the ideal base as it is only 28 kilometres from Bantry.

The proposed new kayaking route around Roaring Water Bay will add one more reason for sporting and adventure enthusiast to checkout the goings on in Skibbereen and surrounding areas of West Cork. A kayaking adventure being just one of many outdoor adventures that await on a stay here with sea angling and whale watching also popular activities.

When it comes to adventure breaks, look no further than our hotel in West Cork as your base whilst partaking in these adventure activities.
